About Self-Compassion
Inspired by general ideas from the work of Dr. Kristin Neff, self-compassion consists of three main elements: Self-Kindness vs. Self-Judgment: Treating yourself with care and understanding rather than critical lashing. Common Humanity vs. Isolation: Recognizing that suffering and personal inadequacy are part of the shared human experience — you are not alone in your struggle. Mindfulness vs. Over-Identification: Observing your painful thoughts without 'becoming' them or blowing them out of proportion.
Self-criticism can make it harder to think clearly and learn from mistakes. Self-compassion, by contrast, involves treating yourself with the same kindness you would offer a friend — which can make it easier to navigate setbacks and keep growing.
This workbook is for anyone who struggles with harsh self-criticism, perfectionism, shame, or chronic feelings of inadequacy. It's particularly valuable for those with a strong inner critic and anyone who finds it easier to be kind to others than to themselves.
Self-compassion and mindfulness are closely connected. We recommend pairing this workbook with our Mindfulness Workbook — mindfulness helps you notice self-critical thoughts so you can respond with kindness.
